There are thousands of people wanting to lose weight. They are trying diet programs, such as NutriSystem, Weight Watchers, Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet, etc. and diet pills, and fad diets, to name a few. Those faced with the challenge of losing weight know all to well that it is not an easy task. Nowadays, with the plethora of diet and weight loss programs available it is difficult for the consumer to choose which diet plan, if any, is right for them. Periodically new trendy/fad diet programs come on the market with goal to catch the attention of the consumers claiming quick and fast weight loss. Caveat Emptor!
There are hordes of commercial online diet programs available. Some of these suggest very low calorie diets, such as those requiring 1000 calories per day. Consumers become quickly unfulfilled with this kind diet. Other weight loss programs are requiring consumers to purchase pre-packaged low-fat meals such as NutriSystem. Pre-packaged meals are appealing to some as it provides a quick and easy way to select food. One potential drawback is that this can be very costly. Another drawback is that
consumer longevity on these types of programs is short. Once the consumer is off of this type of diet program, it may be difficult for consumers to maintain the weight loss achieved because there are no meal planning skills taught.
Liquid diets or liquid meal replacement plans are other diet programs that people have tried. A potential downfall of liquid diets is that, over time it may result in nutritional deficiencies. Also, it could be difficult to stick with this type of diet plan as an answer to losing weight because consumers are usually left with simply a sense of guiltiness and disappointment as a result of the impracticable expectations.
Diet pills are generally used as an alternative means to a weight loss. There are numerous commercial diet pills that make claims of promoting to lose exorbitant amount of pounds in an overweight person. However, according to study 99% of diet pills are unsafe especially those over-the-counter pills. This means that this kind of diet program is not good with people who have a history of any heart diseases because eventually hours after taking the pill, palpitation may takes place. Yet though, no found heart failures, this can still be harmful to the liver eventually by boosting metabolism. This diet program should be associated with a doctor’s prescription for the well being of a consumer.
One other way that promotes quick weight loss just by following a definite set of course of actions is the fad diet. Many studies show that this diet plan can be uncertain. A consumer needs to seek medical attention if side effects occur. The common end result of a fad diet is the regain of weight lost and in the worst case scenario, more weight has been regained than was lost prior to even starting the diet plan.
When choosing a diet plan, be very cautious of diet programs that have any of the following six characteristics:
- They do not include an exercise regimen in the program.
- They leave out one of the major food groups, i.e. No carb diets.
- They are calorie restrictive, meaning fewer than 1200 kcal per day.
- They make “fast” or “quick” weight loss claims.
- They make judgments about certain foods and label foods as being “bad” and prohibit their consumption.
- They make no mention of behavior and/or lifestyle modification.
If the diet program you are contemplating fits any or all of the above traits, weigh out the pros and cons of the diet program before you start. Remember that exercise is a necessary part of any successful weight loss program. An intake of healthy foods and daily exercise are the keys to long term weight loss. You should always consult your physician prior to beginning any diet program and/or exercise program.
