The Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet, low carb diet is said to be the most controversial diet program of all time. This diet plan was first introduced in 1972 by Dr. Robert Atkins, a cardiologist. Even though the low carb / high protein diet was first written about in the late 1800’s, low carb dieting truly came to life with the birth of the Atkins diet. Dr Atkins based this diet program on the theory that overweight people eat too many carbohydrates. Thus, Atkins diet is promoting low carb intakes. Just like Muhammad Ali who just took Atkins diet program to loose weight for his fight in the boxing ring.   Dr. Atkins formulated innovative   perception and brought in new concepts that will absolutely affect everyone’s view on how we look at diets for weight loss as well as other diets for health.

Pros and Cons of the Atkins Diet
Just like any other weight loss program, Atkins diet has positive and negative effects to a human body.

Pros:

  • Compared to any other program, Atkins diet has proven that it burns fat faster. Technically, our body is intended to use two diverse fuels to sustain life and these are the glucose from carbohydrates and ketones from fat. The most important fuel is glucose and fat is just a support. The concept of every other weight loss diet is always based of burning fat. Starvation or eating fewer calories than you use daily is a usual diet that generally designed to burn fat.
  • Unlike any other conventional diet programs, the Atkins diet is not just all about the calorie intake of a dieter. Since replacement of carbs to protein is the main goal, the best source of protein is meat. However, Dr. Atkins warns that every dieter should not stuff themselves but only eat until satisfaction achieved.
  • It is said that of all the conventional weight loss system, Atkins diet is the safest and healthiest according to vast majority of studies. Every study shows that nearly Atkins diet is the winner in dropping down cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. In addition, it is believed that dieters, who have symptoms of acid reflux, sleep apnea, and diabetes got reduced or completely disappears while on the Atkins diet.

Cons:

  • Since it is a weight loss plan it’s primarily aiming to burns fast however, Atkins diet burns fat excessively. Toxic overload is the main concern here because when toxins go through our body, the body’s reaction is the elimination of toxins quickly through our liver and kidneys. Oftentimes this overload in our body hides some of these toxins in our fat cells and so on the process of burning fat, these toxins is discharged yet again into our bloodstream. Evidently, in the first weeks or months of this diet plan,
  • Atkins diet plan can cause fatigue at the outset for two reasons. Firstly, the switching of fuels from glucose to ketones is distressing to a human body which is in deed an extreme alteration in your metabolism. Next reason is, as it is mentioned above, a dieter can absolutely experience toxic overload when burning fat too fast and that might be too hard to handle for a human body at the start.
  • Atkins diet is deficient with good nourishment. A dieter could miss out fundamental nutrients supplied by fruits, and whole grains. This could cause vitamin deficiencies since protein is the main intake of a dieter.

Time for You to Decide
By and large Atkins diet is proven safe, however it is my opinion that this diet should only be used in extreme cases of obesity and for a short duration for the reasons listed in the "Cons" above. It will be important seek advice from your doctor before starting this diet.

If you are given the okay by your doctor, in conjunction with this diet plan, a healthy lifestyle and a gradual exercise should also be maintained. Lots of water and good vitamin supplement are still suggested with any diet over and above the Atkins diet.
